Free Weekly Checks for Hidden Remote Access

October 27, 2026

A few weeks ago we wrote about a remote access program that sat on a customer's computer for over a year without him knowing. Since then, we've made that kind of check automatic.

Every computer with our monitoring tool installed now gets a weekly security sweep that looks for one thing: software that lets someone else control the computer from somewhere else.

What it looks for

Programs like AnyDesk, TeamViewer, ScreenConnect, UltraViewer, and about 90 others, including tools other IT companies use to manage computers. These are real, legitimate tools. Plenty of IT shops use them. They're also the #1 tool scammers ask people to install.

The sweep checks:

  • Installed programs, including ones installed for just one user
  • Background services that run with no icon on the screen
  • Running programs, which catches copies that were never installed, just downloaded and opened
  • Scheduled tasks set to quietly start a remote tool later

Our own support tools are excluded, so the only thing that gets flagged is something we didn't put there.

What happens when something turns up

  • We get an alert the same day the sweep runs
  • We look at it during business hours and figure out if it belongs there (maybe your accountant or software vendor uses it)
  • If it doesn't belong, we contact you before removing anything
  • Nothing is deleted without your OK

What removal costs

  • On a plan: removal and a deep clean are included
  • Not on a plan: simple removal is $50, advanced removal is $99

Why weekly matters

Most people who get scammed don't find out right away. A program gets installed during a fake support call, the call ends, and life goes on. Weeks later, someone logs back in. A weekly check shortens that window from "whenever someone notices" to days.

Don't have our monitoring?

You can check for yourself:

  • Press Start, type Installed apps, and open it
  • Scroll the list for anything with "remote," "desk," "viewer," or "connect" in the name you don't recognize
  • Don't uninstall something you're unsure about. Write the name down and call us

It's the busiest shipping week of the year, and scammers know it. You're probably waiting on a few packages, so a text saying one is stuck doesn't seem strange. That's exactly why it works.

If you're still running Windows 10, you may have heard the free security updates ended this October. They almost did. Microsoft quietly extended them another year, to October 12, 2027. That's good news. But it's a reprieve, not a fix.

We've had some difficult conversations with clients lately. Several have come to us after the loss of a spouse, unsure where to begin with the accounts and devices their loved one always took care of. Most have told us some version of the same thing: "He handled all of that. I don't even know where to start." They couldn't get into his email. They didn't know the passcode to his phone. The bank kept sending security codes to a number they couldn't answer. On top of everything else they were dealing with, they were locked out of their own household. None of this takes a lawyer or a tech degree to prevent. It takes one sheet of paper and about 30 minutes at the kitchen table.
